The origins of our Sencha Goji Berry Japanese Green Tea

For a refreshing burst of goodness, try this fruity number – our luxury loose-leaf No. 57 Sencha Goji Berry tea. Packed with antioxidant-rich goji berries, this exceptional green tea blend is vibrant and delicious, whether served hot as an immune-boosting winter warmer or chilled as a revitalising summer cold brew.

To create this healthy tea, premium green tea leaves have been gently hand-rolled and mixed with goji berries, lemongrass, pomegranate seeds and cornflower blossom. Brewing to a light reddish hue, it has an aroma full of fresh, fruity notes and a distinctive flavour that offers a harmonious balance of sencha, sweet goji berries and pomegranate, plus a hint of citrus from the lemongrass.

Characterised by a sweet, lingering taste, this fruit-flavoured green tea is delicious and invigorating no matter what time of year.

The health benefits of this Goji Berry blend

The health benefits of goji berries have been recognised for centuries in their native China, where they are widely used in traditional medicine, everyday cooking and as an immune-boosting tea. Considered a superfood, goji berries are linked to several anti-ageing benefits, particularly skin and eye health, due to their high levels of an antioxidant called zeaxanthin. This carotenoid gives the berry its brilliant colour, and therefore its 'red diamond' nickname, and has been found to reduce the light-induced oxidative damage that leads to macular degeneration.

Being a red fruit with high levels of vitamin C, antioxidants and amino acids, goji berries are also associated with immune-boosting and flu-fighting properties. Meanwhile, the sencha tea leaves of this speciality blend come with their own health benefits: studies show that green tea may help lower blood pressure and cholesterol, improve dental health and even fight cancer. With the added benefit of vitamin C-rich pomegranate seeds in the mix, a caddy of this unique tea is a must for your kitchen cabinet!

If you love this flavoured green loose leaf tea

To experience two of Japan's most famous products – sencha and matcha – in one tea, try our refreshing, antioxidant-rich Sencha Iri Matcha. Our Genmaicha Iri Matcha also offers an authentic taste of traditional Japanese tea for the vegetal umami deliciousness of matcha and the warmth of toasted rice from the Genmaicha. If you're looking for a superb green tea with nothing added, you can't go past our Supreme Sencha for a premium example of the style or our Sencha for everyday drinking.

For the full range of The Tea Makers of London green teas, see our Tea Shop. Our Classic Green Tea Discovery Collection is a great place to start if you're struggling to choose. Each pack contains five 10g sachets of some of our favourites from China and Japan.

Region

Ise Bay, Mie Pref, Japan

Located in the southeast of Japan, Ise Bay in Mie Prefecture fronts the Philippine Sea, showcasing a varied elevation from sea level to 64 meters. Characterised by a humid subtropical climate, the bay experiences distinct seasonal changes. Summers here are brief yet warm, with temperatures ranging from 21°C to 30°C, transitioning into cooler autumns and winters where temperatures can drop to between 4°C and 13°C. Spring gradually warms the region, setting the stage for another warm summer.

The bay’s weather pattern is predominantly cloudy or overcast, contributing to consistent, albeit varying, levels of rainfall throughout the year. Summer months witness significant cloud cover and the highest rainfall, amplifying the humidity to98%, which starkly contrasts with the drier air seen in late autumn and winter. Wind patterns also vary seasonally, with cool, strong gales typical throughout the year, becoming gentler during the summer months. The bay, enriched by the waters from the Kiso Three, Nikko, and Honai rivers, supports a rich marine life, famed for its fish and seaweed. On its southernmost tip lies the Ise-Shima National Park, a biodiversity hotspot that provides sanctuary to species such as loggerhead turtles and native plants like hibiscus and spider lily, making Ise Bay not just a scenic wonder but also an ecological treasure.
